Causes of Truck Accidents
There are numerous things that can lead to a major truck accident occurring. However, regardless of the causes of truck accidents, one thing remains common across the board and that is that accidents involving trucks can be catastrophic. It is a known fact that people who are involved in accidents with trucks stand a great chance of being seriously injured. In some very unfortunate cases, people may even be killed after being struck by a commercial truck, big rig, 18 wheeler, tractor trailer or delivery truck.
Below, some of the more common causes of truck accidents are listed:
- Driver fatigue. Truck drivers must work extended hours, which means that they can become tired. If drivers do not take breaks from driving or continue to drive while they are fatigued, they can cause horrendous truck accidents.
- Drivers not taking breaks. The law requires truck drivers to take breaks after being on the road for a set period of time. However, some truck drivers do not take required breaks, which can lead to them being tired while driving. Anytime drivers are fatigued, they increase their chances of causing a truck accident.
- Trucking companies overstocking trucks. It is true that trucks can carry vast loads of products and goods, but sometimes companies go over board when they stock trucks. When companies overstock their trucks, an accident may occur because trucks cannot withstand the weight of the materials they are carrying or may be thrown off balance while drivers are on the road. Overstocking trucks is a leading cause of truck rollovers.
- Trucking companies failing to maintain their trucks. Like all vehicles, trucks should be regularly checked by mechanics to ensure that they are in top running condition. Anytime a truck has mechanical defects, an accident can occur.
